While the dream of networking The Wife™'s Win98 machine to my PowerMac G4 remains elusive, some improvments can be made.
Now, at least, the Olde Beeste has appropriate drivers, so we can hot-swap the Memorex 1GB Travel Drive or the Zip250 if we so choose. SneakerNet it is, then, and better than the typical Wintel 1.44 MB floppy, and less wasteful than endlessly burning CD-Rs.
The sound of a Zip250 spinning up whilst attached to a 1997-9 vintage Dell is something odd, let me tell you.

Why should networking be elusive? Ethernet cards, hubs, and cables are cheap... it should be no more than $50 in hardware costs. Once you have that hooked up, it should be relatively simple to get the Mac to see windows shares. The win98 box might have more trouble seeing the mac's drives, but there's always FTP.

Okay, well, I don't actually seem to have your e-mail address there. So, here's a thumbnail of what we got going on; email me at either my agora address or gmail address (agora preferred in this case) if you'd like to respond.
The two computers are, as mentioned, a PowerMac G4 running Mac OS X 10.3.9 and a Dell Wintel running Win98.
What I've been trying to use as the connection is a LinkSys 10/100 5-Port Workgroup switch (Model EZX355W). When both computer's Ethernet cables are plugged in and both computers are energized it "sees" both of them (the both machine's lights are on).
Perhaps I'm using the wrong bit of technology to connect them?
The reason I've found it elusive is that, while there are many references (printed and web-based), we have so far found none that apply to our situation (most are Win2K to Mac OSX, or Win98 to Mac OS 9 (or even 8)). We've had been trying to extrapolate forward (or backward, as the case requires), with an expected lack of success. My many experiments in trying to reach the other computer (even on FTP) have come up as failures as well.
