Manga Explains: Why Ink On Bristol Board?

A couple of weeks ago prior to Book Church we stopped in at the Portland Blick Art Supply store, located and NW 10th and Glisan, and had a look-see.

While there, I had to get a photo of this inspired explanation of why Bristol is good for ink, because it uses a whole lotta manga tropes to explain it plain and clear, and is just plain fun to look at.

When I do draw, I adore Bristol, for whatever that's worth.

If you looked real close, you could see the pink lines of the rough layout. There's not too invisible here.

This one was given the character archetype of "Mean Girl". Maybe she just knows what she wants.

She comes off more as a Wednesday Addams type to me, though. But I'm practicing.

The Wife™ and me dined at Denny's tonight. She had the beef kebab, and I had a sriracha bacon burger; the burger was superb, I must say.

Then there was some diary prolixtude followed by a bit of drawing. I hauled out a book on manga I had with me and used it to draw this:

I also found out that I should check the markings on my pencil a little better; a lifetime of pencil writing means I have habituated to HB and draw best with that; I drew with a 2B and was bemused as to why my point was dulling so fast.

Well, in some ways I've not had a point in literally years, So There's That™.

2801Mark Crilley has an approach to manga that results in a look I like quite a lot … a face with realistic aspects but that visually-addicting manga style. This is from a series of very easy-to-follow manga tutorials on his YouTube channel.

2616.At the library today I went looking for manga with visual style that appealed, and hit upon Pastel, which is some sort of romantic-comedy-shonen joint. I'm not too concerned with subject matter right now; more visual style, for styles my eye enjoys that I would like to emulate for practice. And Pastel hit the spot exactly and satisfyingly. One of the characters is named Sayuri, and this is her:

She had just snuck up on one of the main characters and played a prank on her by pretending to be a violently-inclined mugger, but revealing the game with a squirt of the gun and a knowing wink. That weapon she's holding is indeed a squirt gun.

I instantly saw how I could render that, and here's my go:

I took out the squirty-mark to make it a general girl-with-gun pic. Because we all know that chicks with guns go over big. Here's a close look.

Stiff fun-loving and playful, but a little dangerous maybe.

And I call this one a success.
